MOSCOW, Oct 9 (PRIME) -- Russia’s financial sector lost 2.96 billion rubles from cyberattacks in July 2017–June 2018, down 37% on the year, information security company Group-IB said in a report released on Tuesday.
The bulk of the amount, or 1.304 billion rubles, was stolen through target attacks on local banks, down 20% on the year. Hackers stole 547.8 million rubles through online banking, down 12%.
Perpetrators cashed out 919.5 million rubles in the reported period, down 34% on the year, according to Group-IB.
One or two banks lose money every month because of cyberattacks, the experts said, adding that losses from one successful assault amount to U.S. $2 million on average.
Damages from phishing rose 6% to 251 million rubles, and the total number of daily successful phishing attacks increased to 1,274 from 950 a year earlier. An average amount of theft stands at about 1,000 rubles.
Losses from Android Trojan viruses decreased 77% to 191.7 million rubles with an average amount stolen at 7,000 rubles from 11,000 rubles a year earlier.
Group-IB named four criminal hacker groups presenting a real threat for the financial sector --- Russian-speaking Cobalt, MoneyTaker, Silence, and North Korea’s Lazarus.
